I have just purchased a 1994 HR34, and believe that the hull/engine seal should be replaced after 7 years. Has anyone carried out this themselves, is it best left to an expert, or are there any articles that deal with this subject?

I have been looking for an article for you for some time and at last here it is!
Try "Sailing Today" pages 104 to 106. The recommendations are that you change the diaphragm every seven years as you rightly state. However, on the basis of regular inspection, and that means frequently-like once a month-if there is no sign of leakage whatsoever, then the old addage of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' could well apply. Mine is now 11 years old and is fine but, like you I still wonder!
The basis of my recommendation comes from the Volvo agents both in Brighton and in the Medway. Both of these very reliable agents stated that well over the seven year tarif was quite normal but very often the change was necessary at the request of an insurance company. At all events the cost of the kit is going up fast so you might be tempted to buy one now just to have by you. When I started to enquire in 1997 the cost was £140 it is now around £180.Nuff said and good luck....Don't have nightmaires!
