We sail ALIESHA, a HR36. We intend fitting a SSB radio this winter, probably an ICOM IC-M710. This is a heavy piece of kit, and we have been advised against suspending it from the deckhead outboard of the chart table.
Has anyone got any experience or ideas as to the best location?

whilst looking at the range of Icom SSB sets have you considered the M800? There is a very good system here with a front panel and cable connection enabling you to mount the heavyweight bit both close to the atu unit and somewhere warm and dry say in the aft cabin? Not as up to date as the 710 but every bit as good for the average non radio ham operator.Try Icom in Herne Bay for a list of suppliers some whom may have a second hand set in very good shape. Hi Richard,
We sail "Falconer", a HR382 (1988), and are in the process of installing a Icom M802 MF/HF Transceiver, beforwe embarking on a year-long cruise this fall. ICOM highly suggests grounding the antenna, and the transmitter to the embedded lead keel with copper foil, but we're unsure how to access the keel from inside the hull.
I suspect the bilge compartment is a good bet, but am unsure how best to go about it. Knowing the HR36 & HR382 are very similar designs, we hope you might have some suggestions based on your experience, and perhaps other contacts which may be of help.
Any thoughts would be most appreciared.
