Butane and Propane, Gas and Gaz

When ordering our new HR43 I didn't think much about the gas type and just asked for Camping-Gaz as we have happily used it on previous boats. With some difficulty - as I later discovered - this was supplied by HR in Ellos.

We are planning to spend this summer in the Baltic, Norway and Scotland and it now seems that Camping-Gaz will be virtually unavailable where we will be sailing. Camping-Gaz is butane which does not work well at low temperatures, so propane is the gas of choice further north.

In view of this we need to change, although we might reinstall Camping-Gaz when we sail south again in 2005.

Can anyone recommend what we should do? Whatever system we select should be available in both Scandinavia and Scotland. We can make the change in Denmark during the next few weeks - I think the Camping-Gaz we have will last until then!

Thanks

You can get Camping Gaz in Sweden, its just a little hard to find - and expensive. Its more reasonable in Denmark.

You can use propane with your existing setup, but you need to change the regulator (the pressure and the bottle fittings are different). If your regulator is like ours - on the end of a pipe and screws onto the bottle, just replace it for a propane one. You can swap back when you get home. Actually, most bottles in Scandanavia seem to be a butane/propane mix.

Confronted with the same problem last year during 3 months in Sweden, we continued to use Camping Gaz at enormous cost. We got a couple very expensively in Stockholm in the marina, and HR Spares found us one when we were desperate just before our return to Scotland. We got one at reasonable price in Denmark.

I costed the break-even point for buying just one of the Swedish cylinders and it was about 4 camping gas cylinders, counting the difference in refill prices versus cost of Swedish cylinder, so it depends how much you use.
